Be a loyal customer. Sign up for the agency's loyalty programmes. Much like the airlines and hotels, rental agencies reward loyalty. I rent with Hertz, and they take good care of me (and as much money as I spend...frankly, they should).





If you're in line...ask. You might get a one-class upgrade, but no agency is going to upgrade you from a sub-compact to a Mercedes or similar. Just doesn't happen. The other thing...have a professional appearance. If you look like that which is young and irresponsible, your chances are practically nil.





If price is an issue, your off-airport locations may be a better deal than your airport locations. Your taxes/fees will be lower (in some cases), and your rate could be lower as well.
